Fire The Surgeon General

A sharecropper’s daughter beats racism and poverty to become the first Black Surgeon General—only to be fired for the progressive thinking that got her there. Fire The Surgeon General tells the life story of Dr. Joycelyn Elders, who was also featured in Smart Media’s “Sticky: a (Self) Love Story.”

This powerful film delves into the extraordinary life and legacy of Dr. Joycelyn Elders, the first Black Surgeon General of the United States, amidst a backdrop of intense political turmoil, including the President Clinton marijuana controversy.

Based on the acclaimed book by David Chanoff, "Joycelyn Elders M.D.: From Sharecropper's Daughter to Surgeon General," this compelling documentary centers on the inspirational journey of Dr. Elders. From humble beginnings as a sharecropper's daughter, she overcame racism and poverty to achieve the historic milestone of becoming the first Black Surgeon General. However, her tenure was marked by controversy and dismissal due to her progressive beliefs.

"Fire the Surgeon General" follows in the footsteps of the highly acclaimed 2016 documentary, "Sticky: A (Self) Love Story," which featured the indomitable Dr. Joycelyn Elders.

The film eloquently portrays the challenges Dr. Elders faced throughout her remarkable career. From advocating for improved sex education and healthcare access for the underprivileged with the support of religious leaders to confronting opposition from fanatical evangelical groups, Dr. Elders fearlessly championed her causes.

Affectionately dubbed the "Condom Queen," Dr. Elders played a pivotal role in advancing healthcare for minorities and advocating for the LGBTQ community. While her efforts to secure funding for AIDS awareness earned admiration, it was her progressive suggestion of teaching masturbation as part of sex education that ultimately led to her resignation.

"Fire the Surgeon General" also offers an intimate glimpse into Dr. Joycelyn Elders' life as she celebrates her ninetieth birthday, providing a comprehensive portrait of this influential figure. Additionally, the documentary delves into the events surrounding the controversial arrest of Dr. Elder's son on drug charges, drawing intriguing parallels to the political turmoil of that era.

Central to the documentary's narrative is the President Clinton marijuana controversy, which gained national attention during Dr. Elders' tenure. Her statements in favor of exploring marijuana's potential benefits and her call for government study on drug legalization to reduce crime rates added to the nation's heated debates on drug policy.
